Customers can affix “smart” labels, and never lose a parcel again
TEMPE, Ariz. and SAN DIEGO – January 31, 2024 - Next year, senders will be able to track deliveries in real time, anywhere in the world with pinpoint accuracy through satellite-connected “smart labels”. These smart labels will be powered by printed batteries produced by Printed Energy, Inc., in partnership with direct-to-satellite connectivity company, eSAT Global, Inc.
Printed Energy and eSAT expect to work with world-leading label companies in the development and implementation of this solution.
Chairman of Printed Energy, Trevor St Baker said, “The concept of wafer-thin smart labels is in its formative stages, with broad implementation being one of the key barriers to broad implementation. The market driver has been a dearth of battery technologies capable of being produced reliably, in volume and at low cost.”
The smart label will revolutionise package tracking and logistics by combining California-based eSAT Global’s proprietary GEO (geosynchronous Earth orbit) satellite technology and existing cellular networks with Printed Energy’s innovative, environmentally friendly, printed batteries to create a logistics solution with industry-leading coverage and eco-friendly credentials.
President and CEO of eSAT Global, Rick Somerton said, “The new smart label opens a world of possibilities for enhanced security, reduced waste and optimized supply chains in a variety of industries including pharmaceuticals, agriculture and cold chain. This partnership is a game changer for the logistics industry.
“By combining our global connectivity with Printed Energy’s sustainable battery technology, we’re creating smart labels that can track valuable packages virtually anywhere on Earth, even in remote locations beyond cellular reach.’’
Printed Energy and eSAT Global have executed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of smart labels and are already sharing marketing intelligence and working together to develop market opportunities.
Printed Energy has developed breakthrough techniques for manufacturing fully printed, flexible batteries. The company’s zinc-ion batteries (ZIB) are thin, flexible, non-toxic and can be shaped and scaled for a variety of applications such as smart tags and labels, wearables, medical devices, skin patches and tags for timed sporting events.
From its cutting-edge facility in Arizona, Printed Energy mass manufactures products that integrate electronics and printed batteries onto the same surface without requiring wires, which provides a complete device solution for the customer.
Printed Energy CEO George Linscott said, “These flexible, low-cost printed batteries are the perfect fit for powering these smart labels and a perfect complement to eSAT’s satellite technology. They’re lightweight, durable and environmentally friendly, providing long-lasting power without the harmful drawbacks of traditional batteries. This partnership allows us to scale our technology and make a significant impact on the future of global logistics.’’
The eSAT/Printed Energy smart labels will offer several unique advantages:
Printed Energy is 100%-owned by the St Baker Energy Innovation Fund, an Australian-based investment firm founded by Brisbane entrepreneur, Trevor St Baker, focused on driving the transition to a lower carbon future through strategic investments in pioneering companies.
Rodger Whitby, Printed Energy board member added, “The partnership with eSAT Global was not just about technology, but about driving positive change. Our printed batteries are environmentally friendly and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of traditional batteries. By enabling businesses to track and optimise their supply chains, we can help to reduce waste and minimize environmental impact.’’
